Privacy Policy
Git Streak Monitor (the Chrome extension) is designed so that your data stays on your own device. It has no backend server of its own, no account system, and no analytics or tracking. This page describes exactly what the extension stores, where, and what leaves your machine.
The short version
-
The extension talks to exactly one external service:
GitHub's API (
https://api.github.com), using a Personal Access Token that you provide. -
Everything the extension stores — your token, your settings, your streak data — is
kept on your device in
chrome.storage.local. It is never sent to us or to any third party. - We (the developer) operate no server, collect no analytics, and receive none of your data.
What the extension stores, and where
All of the following is stored locally on your device via the
browser's chrome.storage.local API. It is not transmitted anywhere
except as noted under "Network activity" below.
- Your GitHub Personal Access Token (PAT) — used to authenticate
requests to the GitHub API on your behalf. Sent only to
https://api.github.com, never to the developer. - Your GitHub username — used to look up your contributions.
- Your timezone and reset-offset preference — used to decide when "today" begins for contribution counting, matching GitHub's own day boundary.
- Your preferences — streak tracking on/off, memories on/off, reminder time, and other toggles.
- Derived data — today's contribution count, your current streak and the date it started, the timestamp and status of the last sync, and a per-day cache of "memories" (commits found on this calendar day in previous years).
Uninstalling the extension removes this local storage.
Network activity
The extension makes network requests to one host only:
-
https://api.github.com/*— GitHub's REST and GraphQL API. These requests are authenticated with your PAT and are used to check your token when you save it, read your contribution calendar, count today's contributions, and (if enabled) find your commits from this day in prior years.
The extension makes no requests to any other server, including none to the developer. There is no telemetry, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party SDKs.
Permissions and why they are needed
| Permission | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
storage | Save your token, settings, and streak data locally on your device. |
alarms | Periodically refresh your contribution status and fire the optional daily reminder. |
notifications | Show the optional local reminder if you enable it. Notifications are generated on your device; nothing is sent externally. |
host_permissions: https://api.github.com/* | Allow the extension to call GitHub's API to read your contributions. This is the only host it is permitted to contact. |
The extension uses no content scripts — it does not read, modify, or inject anything into the web pages you visit.
Your GitHub token
Your PAT is a credential you create in your GitHub account settings. You choose its scopes and you can revoke it at any time from github.com/settings/tokens. Revoking the token immediately stops the extension from accessing your GitHub data. Grant the token only the scopes needed to read your contributions.
Data sharing
We do not collect your data, so there is nothing to share, sell, or disclose. Your interactions with GitHub's API are governed by GitHub's Privacy Statement.
Children's privacy
The extension is a developer productivity tool and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If the extension's data practices change (for example, a new permission), this policy will be updated in the same change, and the date above will reflect it.
